
Madrid, capital of Spain as well as of the Autonomous region of Madrid, is located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, on the south-eastern tip of Europe. Its area of 8.028 km2 is surrounded by two other autonomous regions: Castilla y León , in the north-west, and Castilla-La Mancha, in the south-east.
Madrid has both a mountain chain, "Sistema Central", and a river valley, that of the "Tajo" river. The city of Madrid is on the "Manzanares" river, a tributary of the "Jarama" that flows into the "Tajo".
Madrid is 1981.2 ft (650 meters) above sea level, though there are areas which are over 2133 ft (700 m). Its temperature ranges from 32º F (0º C), or slightly lower in the winter, to 104º F (40º C) in the summer.

Spain is one of the 12 countries in the European Union that adhered to the Economic and Monetary Union, accepting the euro as its currency on January 1 2002. Of the now 25 European Union countries, those which use the euro besides Spain are Germany, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Finland, France, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg and Portugal.
