This sport has been played for many years in towns and cities throughout the region. The Madrid Tennis Federation (www.ftm.es) provides current information on schools, clubs and courts as well as introducing less well-known specialities such as wheelchair tennis.
At the professional level, in 2002 Madrid became part of the international circuit of the Association of Tennis Professionals, and joined the list of cities hosting the Masters Series. The success of this event was a contributing factor in Madrid’s decision to become one of the tennis capitals of the world.
A glance into the future would reveal how Madrid’s Manzanares Park will in a few years become the site of a tennis centre to be known as The Magic Box, designed by the prestigious French architect Dominique Perrault.
This steel, wood and glass structure will house a space which will be unique throughout the world, with covered stadiums and stands capable of seating 12,000, 3,500 and 2,500 spectators respectively. This is a complex designed for lovers of tennis, with 16 outdoor courts, 5 indoor courts with seating for 500 spectators and 6 covered training courts.
